Night Fishing in Malibu 08-29-2013

Wanting to get in some fishing before a trip out of town Brian and I headed to Malibu to do some night fishing despite horrible conditions for fishing (outgoing tide and no moon). Well, the horrible conditions prevailed and we ended up getting skunked. We fished from 6:20 PM till 8:49 PM with hardly even a nibble. Bait was squid. It was nice to get the fishing in, too bad there was no catching. Oh well we will get em the next time :).

Surf Fishing Malibu 08-25-2013

Running a little behind on my posts since Google decided to change the photo editor in Picassa...grrr.

Anyways, I got to Malibu around 5:55 AM and Brian arrived a little after 7:00 AM and we left around Noon. We fished the incoming tide most of the day with a low tide of -.037 at 4:44 AM and high tide of 5.11 at 10:53 AM. Bait was squid all day.

I caught my first fish at 6:10 AM which was a 22" leopard shark. I didn't catch anything else until 8:27 AM, which was a decent sized black aka buttermouth perch. Brian got his only fish of the day at 10:28 AM which was a huge 20" Johnny Bass aka Olive Rockfish, best fish of the day by a long shot. I closed out the catching with a small cabazon at 11:29 AM. Kind of a slow day of fishing, but at least we caught some fish :). Everything but the bass were released.

Night Fishing Malibu 08-22-2013

Brian and I decided to do some more night fishing since the grunion run was still going on and the moon was still almost full. No grunion spotted tonight either, but fishing was pretty good even thought there was a ton of crab around chomping on our bait (Brian caught and released two nice sized rock crabs). We arrived at a little after 7:00 PM and fished the incoming tide until a little after high tide (5.32') when we left around 11:15 PM. Bait was squid all night. Brian caught two small grass rockfish and a small calico bass and I caught two small grass rockfish all before 8:00 PM (only one picture taken of the bunch since I was again in the middle of the ocean standing on a rock). I caught the rest of the fish starting with a nice sized sargo at 9:47 PM, then a small leopard shark at 10:28 PM and finishing out with a thornback ray at 10:42 PM. Another nice night of fishing in Malibu, all fish caught were released.

Night Fishing Malibu 08-20-2013

So Brian and I decided to do some night fishing. We picked this particular night because it was a full moon and the first day of the last scheduled grunion run for 2013. Didn't see any grunion, but fishing was red hot most of the night! We started fishing around 6:20 PM and the first fish was caught by me at 6:27 PM, a small leopard shark. The next fish landed was a small grass rockfish by me at 7:53 PM. Brian joined the action by catching a bat ray with a 32" wingspan at 8:00 PM (damn thing was heavy). He also caught a small grass rockfish after that, but I didn't note the time. I caught the next four fish which were a nice 16" calico bass at 8:33 PM, a small grassy at 8:48 PM, a small grassy at 8:56 PM and another small grassy at 9:19 PM. All the grassies landed were between 8 and 11". Brian lost a nice grassy at his feet at 9:05 PM, it looked to be about 13-14" or so. I also lost a nice one about 15' out around this time that looked like a large calico or rockfish. Brian closed out the catching with a decent sized (but not big enough to keep for us) shovelnose guitarfish at 11:00 PM and we left shortly after that. Bait was squid all night, everything but the calico bass released. Nine total fish caught, I will take that any day of the week :).

Surf Fishing Malibu 08-16-2013

Decided I needed to get out for a quick fishing trip, so I headed to Malibu. I arrived at around Noon and left at around 3:00 PM. First fish of the day was a beautify colored 12" cabazon caught at 12:40 PM. My second and last fish for the day was a 20" or so leopard shark caught at 2:09 PM. Both fish released and bait was squid as usual. It was nice to catch fish on such a short outing.

Surf Fishing Malibu 08-14-2013

Decided to do some early morning fishing with Brian, so we headed to Malibu. I got there around 6:00 AM, just before sunrise and Brian came around 6:45 AM. I caught my first fish of the day at 6:06 AM, hot dog, first cast and I get a fish! It was a small grass rockfish. Second fish came 30 minutes later at 6:37 AM which was another small grassy. I caught fish #3, another small grassy and #4 a 12" Calico bass sometime between then and around 9:00 AM. Didn't get pics with my camera which gives the time since I was in the middle of the ocean and I don't take my phone there, lol. Brian caught the fish of the day a nice fat 16" cabazon at around 9:15 AM. We left around 10:30 AM. Bait was squid, cabazon kept, all other fish were released to grow up a little :).

Surf Fishing Malibu 08-09-2013

Fished in Malibu alone from around 6:15 AM till around Noon. When I arrived, I was surprised by a huge assembly of birds diving for what I assume was some type of bait in the water (pics and video below). They were just out of casting distance, so I couldn't try and get at anything bigger chasing the bait. With all the bait in the water, I was not hopeful on catching much, but I did manage to catch a small grass rockfish at 7:55 AM and a small leopard shark at 9:22 AM. Both caught on squid. I have been since this trip and the bait seems to be hanging around. Not sure if this will be good or bad for fishing :). We shall see.

Surf Fishing Malibu 08-06-2013

Brian and I decided to do some night fishing. We arrived at our spot at around 7:00 PM, which gave us about an hour and a half before it would be dark to fish (a great time to fish, I try to do it and early morning sunrise fishing as often as I can). We were fishing the incoming tide till 9:30 PM. Fishing was somewhat slow, but we both caught fish. I caught the first fish of the day with a small leopard shark at 7:21 PM. Brian got in on the action at 7:52 PM pulling in a new species for him, a small horn shark. I caught the next fish, two hours later, which was another small leopard shark. Brian finished out the catching with a small thornback ray at 11:11 PM. We left shortly after that. All fish released, bait was squid.
