Palos Verdes 08-26-2012

Brian and I each caught one small Leopard shark on squid. I caught an eel on squid, abd we both caught a bunch of lobster which were released of course. I had a large shark that broke my 40 pound test after jumping about 20' from me, very disappointing.

Hobson Beach 08-19-2012

So my parents were leaving today to go camping at Hobson Beach so Brian and I decided it would be a great time to go fish there since it had been a while. We arrived around 10:15 AM or so and scoped out the campsites for my parents. No one had yet left so we parked in day parking and started fishing on the rocks near the staircase with squid for bait (me on a a high low, Brian on a single dropper loop). After about an hour I caught my first fish for the day, a 30" Leopard Shark that had a perfect hook set in the corner of the mouth, but had wrapped the low hook and weight around it several times. After a few quick pictures and unraveling it from the mess it made with the line back it went to grow some.

Right after the catch, one of the spots my parents like opened up so I ran to the car and snagged it. After filling out the paperwork and paying for the site it was back to fishing until they arrived. Neither of us caught anything else before they got there and got the site situated and lunch from the snack shop for all of us (tasty burgers and fries).

After lunch, which was also after high tide, we fished the rocks with my dad for a while and then Brian and I started walking towards Seacliff along the beach as the tide receded .  A short time later I hooked up with another Leopard Shark which was bigger. After horsing him in I was excited thinking it may be over 36"...a quick measure and...33", doh! It vomited up what looked like crab eggs and a few sand crabs. After unhooking it back it went into the deep blue. Neither one of us caught anything else after that. We mostly used squid or live sand crabs, but I also tried perch, shrimp and anchovy for no takers.

We fished a little after sunset and dinner (a great tri-tip salad and garlic bread spread prepared by my mom and dad) but did not catch anything either. We left the site around 9:00 PM with full bellies and our fishing itch for the moment satisfied!

Thanks for everything Mom & Dad!

Surf Fishing Malibu 08-18-2012

Had the wife drop me off at the Malibu spot around 5:45 AM. Was set up and fishing five minutes later. It was an incoming tide until around 10:30 AM which was a 4.5+ high tide. Tried squid, fresh sand crabs and salted and unsalted anchovy. Only creature caught on the day besides the bait was a decent sized rock crab. Sent safely back in the water after a quick picture. Skunked fish wise. Had one fish on, but hook must have been not in well as it came off about half way in. Felt like a small to medium sized leopard shark. Left around 11:30 AM when wife came back to get me after her morning shift. Weather was downright perfect. Water was clear, but whole area stunk of rotting lobsters. Lots of baby lobster shells all over. Season is almost here!

Surf Fishing Malibu 08-12-2012

After the long day yesterday I decided I still needed to fish a little more. My sixth trip in nine days! I only had time for a short session so I timed it to be around high tide. Got there around 3:30 PM and brought squid and anchovy for bait...also brought cheap pantiehose to keep the anchovy on the hook. Worked pretty good, but didn't get many bites on it. Fished till 6:00 PM catching nothing (Skunked). Had a few nibbles here and there, but pretty much a very slow day. Still great to be out on the water.

After getting skunked I was treated to a fabulous dinner at Sushi Iki in Tarzana. This place is very pricy, but worth every penny (especially when I am not paying, lol). My favorite dish of the night was Halibut, wrapped around duck liver and topped with caviar, VERY tasty! Also had my first every Dungeness Crab as shown below, also very tasty but almost the same as the free rock crabs I can catch.
Gonna be getting one of these soon (not this model exactly). Hope it helps my catch rate and quality.

Jetty Fishing Ventura Harbor 08-09-2012

Flannery and I decided to hit up a jetty we have had decent luck at in the past for a short fishing outing. We arrived at the jetty around 9:30 AM and proceeded to the end. Along the way a nice fellow fisherman gave us a bunch of fresh dead anchovies. We both started out with this for bait and did not get anything. We kept getting bites, but it is hard to keep those things on your hook if you do not have thread with you. I had dropped mine down a deep hole upon arrival, so that kinda sucked, lol. We also tried squid and I tried perch, mackerel, queen fish, bull head and shrimp. I caught one small thorn-back ray on squid and lost something that felt fairly large when I was reeling in my last cast and thought I was just snagged...a few head shakes later and I realized a tad too late I had a fish and it went into a rock or something. After pulling from different angles for about 5-10 minutes my 40 pound test finally broke. Oh well, next time! No pics this time, waves were too big and we were getting splashed a lot.

Surf Fishing Malibu 08-07-2012

Unexpectedly having the day off, I decided to hit my Malibu spot in the morning for a bit. I only brought squid since I wanted to travel light. Baited up and sent out my first offering around 9:30 AM. Caught my first fish at around 10:50 AM which was a nice and fat 26" leopard shark (Pictured below, of course returned safely). Flannery arrived at some point and joined me. I caught two more leopard sharks (about 22" and 20" if I recall correctly) on squid and Brian got the big ole skunk on squid and sand crabs. Another lovely day in Malibu!

After fishing till about 3:30 PM we headed back to my pad  to do up some fish and chips. Filleted four rockfish from my freezer, three grass rockfish from Malibu and one vermilion rockfish from a boat trip a while back. Slice potatoes then fry in oil then egg wash, Panko and bread crumb fish, do a couple minutes a side and you are done. Good stuff!

Jetty Fishing Port Hueneme 08-05-2012

Picked up Flannery at 10:00 AM at his pad and after dropping off his woman at work in Thousand Oaks we headed to a Port Hueneme jetty. After the very long walk across sand with all our gear we finally arrived and started fishing around 11:30 AM. We stared about half way up the left part of the jetty and didn't catch anything at all. One gentleman near the base was drilling Calico Bass, one about 16" or so according to Flannery (I did not see it). I moved down to the end of the jetty around noon and he stayed in the middle till around 1 then came to the end with me. I caught one 10-11" brown rockfish (first time catching one that I recall) on frozen sardine and Brian didn't catch anything. We moved over to the other side of the jetty around 3:00 PM and I started with squid and sardine and Brian used sand crabs. Brian landed one 13" cabazon and one 9" or so grass rockfish. I also tried sand crabs after seeing his success but I did not catch anything on them. We packed it up and prepared for the long walk back around 4:30 PM both satisfied that we caught fish even though they were all released (some gave me dirty looks when I sent the brown rockfish back, lol).

Surf Fishing Malibu 08-04-2012

Surf fished in Malibu with Flannery while our women went to 3rd street. They dropped us off around 5:00 PM and were on their way. We set up shop on the shore. We both tried squid, sand crabs and anchovy and I think I tried perch, shrimp, mackerel and croaker as well. Fished hard till about 11:00 PM which was about 30 minutes past the scheduled grunion run. Didn't see any before we left and neither of us caught anything. Kinda sucks to get skunked, but you can't get skunked if you ain't fishing!

Only pic of the night:
