Surf Fishing Malibu CA 06-04-2014

Hmm, no fishing in June yet....time to fix that by heading down to my favorite local city, Malibu, CA :). No early morning this day since low tide was a +0.71 @ 8:52 AM and high tide was a +3.59 @ 4:10 PM, bait was squid as usual. We (my wife Alisa and I) arrived at 9:47 AM to a tide still pretty far out. I moved up and down the coast for a while as the tide slowly came in before settling on my final "rock" a little before 11:00 AM (meaning, after that I would be casting from shore as the tide would be too far in for me to feel safe walking out on slippery rocks to a large rock to stand and fish from).

Fish #1 came at 11:16 AM, which was a medium sized Calico Perch which was promptly released after a long distance photo of it, lol.

Fish #2 came at 12:05 PM, which was a small, 11" or so, Grass Rockfish. Grass Rockfish are my second favorite fish to eat, only California Halibut tops it if you ask me (and the Malibu Cafe has it on it's menu, pricey but yummy), but too small for my personal size limit and not meaty enough to keep even if it was an inch bigger, so back it went as well.

No more action after that but it was a gorgeous day out and I caught fish, so I was a happy fisherman :). We packed up and headed home at 2:00 PM. Another great day of fishing at the beach in Sunny Southern California! You can really see how different this particular spot looks at low and high tides if you compare the panorama pics below BTW.

Surf Fishing Malibu 11-08-2013

Back in LA, I decided to hit up my favorite city to fish in, Malibu of course! I arrived at a little before 7:00 AM to absolutely gorgeous weather! Got my first and only fish of the day, a nice sized (12"-13") Calico Perch at 8:03 AM. Nothing else after that until I left around 11:15 AM. I got a little bored since fishing was slow and played around with and made a little spread of all of the crustacean shells lying around on the beach, which you can see below :).

Surf Fishing Malibu With B 10-03-2013

Brian and I decided to hit up one of the Malibu spots for some afternoon fishing. Arrived at the spot at around 3:15 PM and stayed till around 7:15 PM. Bait was squid as usual. The first fish caught was a small grass rockfish by me at 4:47 PM. I then caught a decent sized calico perch at 5:07 PM and another small grass rockfish at 5:20 PM. Nothing for either of us after that until about 6:20 PM my line gets slammed. After a nice fight trough the kelp and rocks I pull in my biggest leopard shark caught to date at 35"+. Sooooo close to being in my belly, it even might have been 36" but it was too close to keep and risk a fine. Brian didn't catch anything unfortunately on this trip. He will get em the next time :). All fish caught were released.

Hobson Beach 11-23-2012

After a sleep in the car overnight I woke up to breakfast with mom, dad, sister and her fiance. A little fishing first off though of course. Caught a nice 13" Calico Perch before breakfast. Then fished more after breakfast with Brian who drove up in the morning and my brother and dad in the afternoon. We all slayed the perch. I caught huge BSP and Calico Perch on squid, biggest was 13.5" and had a bite mark on it's side from something. Caught a total of 7 or 8 perch, keeping only the 12" plus ones for the parents. Brian also caught 5 or 6 BSP on squid, my brother caught a dozen or so on gulp camo sand worms (though most of his were the smaller versions), and my dad caught a few on squid as well. Great day of fishing with the family and friends
