Night Fishing Malibu 08-22-2013

Brian and I decided to do some more night fishing since the grunion run was still going on and the moon was still almost full. No grunion spotted tonight either, but fishing was pretty good even thought there was a ton of crab around chomping on our bait (Brian caught and released two nice sized rock crabs). We arrived at a little after 7:00 PM and fished the incoming tide until a little after high tide (5.32') when we left around 11:15 PM. Bait was squid all night. Brian caught two small grass rockfish and a small calico bass and I caught two small grass rockfish all before 8:00 PM (only one picture taken of the bunch since I was again in the middle of the ocean standing on a rock). I caught the rest of the fish starting with a nice sized sargo at 9:47 PM, then a small leopard shark at 10:28 PM and finishing out with a thornback ray at 10:42 PM. Another nice night of fishing in Malibu, all fish caught were released.

Malibu Grunion 07-20-2012

My buddy Brian and I wanted to fish the grunion run which was slated to start at around 10:30 PM so we headed to my special spot in Malibu. We arrived at about 7:45 PM and set up shop on the rocks. I came pretty light on the bait front, only taking squid and a couple perch. Things started out pretty slow, but started to pick up closer to sunset. I caught the first fish of the night, which was a small leopard shark on squid around 8:45 PM or so. After that I caught a small rockfish on a chunk of BSP around 9:30 PM or so. Brian hooked into something very big that broke him off after a short run. He re-baited and went right back out. A short time later he was hooked up again. Whatever it was peeled off line so fast I thought I was going to see smoke from his reel, lol. After about a 5 minute battle he got it up on shore...but it was about 100' North of where we were and there was no beach in between, only slick rocks. After falling once trying to get over to the fish it broke the line when I was about 50' from it. I could not see what it was unfortunately. Brian caught a nice 13+" sargo on squid around 11:30. At around 11:45 I headed down to the area with beach still exposed to see if any grunion were around. I saw two right away but nothing after that. Tried one of them as live bait which got a couple tugs before losing the bait, but didn't catch anything. We packed it in around 12:30 AM. Great night of fishing, too bad the big one got away (probably a bat ray, but possibly a white sea bass).

Redondo Breakwall 06-30-2012 to 07-01-2012

Met up with John aka Redkorn at around 8:00 PM at the secret shrimping location and set up shop. Fishing at the shrimping grounds was dead for me all night, John caught one legal sculpin that we released because we did not feel like dealing with it. Shrimping was also pretty slow catching three or four every so often. Ended up with about 30 or so to use for bait at the big jetty at Redondo in the morning. One cool thing that did happen was we were checked by DFG for licenses and catch while shrimping. They were super cool and intrigued by the shrimping. I asked them what the limit was since the regs are kind of vague, but they really did not know either. After checking the licenses and BSing a bit they were on there way. We drove over to Redondo at around 4:20 AM and found the gate closed :(. Usually if you get there before the parking dude you can just pay hourly on a board they have near the parking area. Not today, we had to wait for about an hour and a half before he woke up and let us in. Fishing was very slow, I caught one 10" or so Sargo and John did not catch anything. John left around 8:00 AM when his ride showed up and I split around 9:30 AM. One fish in 13+ hours.....yeah, kind of slow, lol.

Redondo Break Wall 02/26/2012

So after taking a couple hour nap after the Ventura trip I got up and headed to Culver City to pick up Thresher_One / Robert at about 10:30 P.M. on 02/25/2012. We arrived at the secret location to make bait for the morning. We worked all night getting live peppermint shrimp as bait for the morning fishing at the jetty. I also caught five huge (all 14+ ") pacific mackerels while making bait (I could have caught all I wanted, but five was enough). At around 5:30 A.M. we moved to the main jetty / break wall at Redondo. We walked about half way out and fished from about 6 A.M. till about 10:45 A.M.. Robert was killing it and I was picking off a fish every so often. Robert released about 6 big pregnant black / butter mouth perch and about 5 small sargo. He kept one large sargo (15+") and two Split Tails (new species to me). I landed about 7 butter mouth perch (kept two, the others were either to small or were pregnant) a tiny opal eye and one decent sized sargo. I hooked into something that felt pretty massive, but either it or a seal broke my 30 pound test :(. Robert lost one 16+" opal eye one the rocks on the way up (it was a dang nice looking fish). All and all another great outing with Robert at Redondo and our secret shrimping location.

Redondo Jetty 12/23/2011 - 12/24/2011

Hit the secret location south of Redondo for the Peppermint shrimp bait for use on the big Redondo Jetty. Met Redkorn around 11:30 P.M. and proceeded to the location. Shrimping was super slow, only managed about 15, but the time went quick because of the great company and conversation. Moved to the big jetty around 6:00 A.M. and fished till about 12:00 Noon for one small Sargo and a 2" cabazon. I tried Squid, Mackerel and Halfmoon for bait after the shrimp ran out. Pretty much no fish after I used the 15 shrimp for bait. Redkorn did land a short Halibut on the harbor side using a jig. Slow day of shrimping and fishing for us....there were a couple Asian gentlemen just North of us who were killing it with Ghost Shrimp under a bobber and around an 8' leader. I will have to try the Ghost Shrimp one of these times (they landed a huge Cab, two large Calico Bass and a few Opal Eyes).
