Even though I had fished the previous two days and had a grassy ready for the freezer, my buddy Doug (in first pic) called me up and asked if I felt like fishing because he felt like going to the beach. That was enough for me and after he got to my house we headed down to Malibu, CA of course. We arrived around 9:20 AM and I went to fishing while he wandered around soaking in the beauty. I got my first fish at 10:20 AM after moving down about a 1/4 mile from my original location, which was a 10" or so grass rockfish. Got some bites, nibbles and snags here and there until 11:11 AM when my bait (squid) was hammered and the fight was on! After a short battle I pulled in a beautiful fat piggy Cabazon that measured 19+" and weighed 3 pounds 3.9 ounces (after I got it positioned so it's tail was not resting on the cutting board). What a fish! After getting it in a bucket of water to stay alive I went back to fishing and caught my final fish for the day at 11:22 AM, which was a 9-10" grass rockfish. After packing up and bleeding the cabby we headed home at 11:40 AM, me being very happy with the results :). The packaged fillets in the last picture from the grassy the day before and the cabby was mislabeled and should read that I caught the cabby on 01-23-2014. Another fantastic day of fishing in Malibu, CA in sunny Southern California, man I love it here!!!

Ventura Pier 05-15-2012
Hit up Ventura Pier from about 1:30 PM till 10:30 PM. Set up shop with the crab net in my usual spot baited with the usual menagerie of junk this time consisting of mackerel, sardines, whitefish head and rock fish head. Crabbing was off the charts all day. Ended up keeping twenty something rock crabs (red, yellow and rock) and two spider crabs, one if which was the biggest caught to date for me. Fishing wise you could have all the queenfish you could ever possibly want if that is your thing (I caught and released all fish caught on the day). Didn't see much else, except for a large smelt and a few sand sharks caught by others shortly before leaving. Birds were diving and dolphins were around the pier, but I never saw any baitfish anywhere on the pier. Guess the bait is hanging out just outside the pier. I forgot to bring a sabiki so I made one from crappie jigs I had in my tackle box which worked just fine.

Seal Beach Grunion Run 03-10-2012
Met up with Redkorn North of Seal Beach Pier around 11:45 P.M.. He and his girl had been South of the pier for the last hour and a half and didn't see anything. When I arrived I saw quite a few teams leaving with buckets and bags about half full and there were probably 25-30 teams roaming up and down the shore. We would see one or two every so often and a few times a female buried herself which brought up three or four males. I managed to grab three of the little buggers (actually it was two and Redkorn caught one which he gave to me). After 12:30 it shut off completely. Wasn't the great mass of fish I was hoping to see on the beach, but it was fun none the less. These things look just like top smelt, if I caught one while fishing I would say it was top smelt. Till the next time.

Surf Fishing North of Santa Monica 03/04/2012
Hit up the surf for a couple hours with Brian from about Noon till 2:30 P.M. We used sand crabs, live shore crabs, shrimp, muscle and limpets for bait for a big ole skunk. Beach was packed with people since the weather was nice. The only thing we caught all day were nice views such as the one below (my camera sucks from far away, but it was phenomenal).
