Surf Fishing Malibu 01-17-2014

Wanting to take advantage of the near full moon conditions and the incoming tide (low was a -0.36' @ 5:15 PM and high was a 3.73' @ 11:36 PM and sunset was around 6:15 PM), Brian and I headed to Malibu to do some fishing. We arrived around 4:00 PM and started fishing. Bait was squid, as always.

Brian started out the catching with a beautiful and fat 19"+ calico bass at 4:54 PM. I got in on the action with a nice fat 15-16" grass rockfish at 5:11 PM. We then had our first double hook up (we both hooked up and reeled in at the same time) at 5:22 PM, which was a 9" or so grass rockfish for me and a nice 12" or so grass rockfish for Brian. I then caught a 9"+ grass rockfish at 5:30 PM and Brian caught a nice 13" grassy at 5:38 PM. Double hook up #2 came at 5:45 PM in the form of a small grassy for Brian and a little baby lobster for me (which was of course released). I then caught a 12" or so cabazon at 6:00 PM and a 7" grass rockfish at 6:21 PM and a 12"+ grass rockfish at 6:34 PM and Brian closed out the catching with an 11" or so grass rockfish at 6:36 PM. We came intending to fish the full moon more, but we were tired by 7:00 and packed up and left.

What a great day of fishing! Final tally was: one calico bass and five grass rockfish for Brian and five grass rockfish, one sub-legal cabazon and one baby lobster for me. We kept the calico bass, and the three largest grass rockfish (12"+ is our own personal size restriction on rockfish unless it is gut hooked or otherwise injured) which you can see processed and packaged in the last picture. We enjoyed doing it, hopefully you enjoyed reading about it and the pics the go along with it.

Surf Fishing Malibu 01-04-2014

I surf fished in Malibu alone from 6:21 AM till 10:01 AM. Low tide was 1.45' @ 5:47 AM and high tide was 5.46' @ 11:03 AM. Bait was squid. My first catch of the day was an unusual one, a just short of legal sized lobster (I always have my gauge with me, and of course I released it because it is illegal to take lobster via hook and line) at 7:14 AM. The next catch was a nice 13" grass rockfish caught at 7:25 AM which I kept. I then caught an 11" or so black sea perch aka butter mouth perch at 7:50 AM, which was hit by something on the way in because it's tail was damaged and bleeding a bit (see pic). After releasing the perch (I do not like to eat perch) my final catch of the day was a 10.5" grass rockfish at 8:26 AM, which I released to get bigger and make babies :). I should have left at this point, but like to fish a minimum of four hours when fishing is good...well the extra hour and a half I stayed resulted in three lost weights, four lost hooks and zero fish, lol. Oh well, still a great day of fishing in Malibu!

Lobster Opener in Catalina 09-27-2013 to 09-29-2013

So I decided to go along with my friends Hashem aka Mahigeer and John aka Redkorn to Catalina for the lobster opener this year. Season opened at 12:01 AM on 09/28/2013. Mahigeer and I arrived around 7:30 AM on 09-27-2013 and John came in on the 9:00 PM boat. We all left on 09-29-2013, me on the 10:15 AM boat. Lots of fun was had, many fish were caught (including my first ever bonito from shore), lots of eye candy was enjoyed and most importantly I did come home with one lobster (thanks to John ;))! A very detailed report of the trip can be found here Catalina Mole, lobster opener 9/27/2013 which is the PFIC (Pier Fishing In California) website we all met on many years ago. Below are my pics from the trip and a few comments, but make sure to check out the link for the detailed report, it is a beautifully put together report of the trip. BTW, I was up for close to 90 hours straight between the day before and this trip, so I was a bit tired when I got home, lol.
