Malibu Produces Again 10-28-2012

After catching some nice fish in Malibu the day before, when Brian asked where we should fish I quickly said Malibu surf :). We decided to meet up there, I arrived around 7:35 AM and for the first time ever, someone was in my spot :(. Oh well, it was bound to happen one of these times, gotta get up earlier next time. I decided to try a little further South from my usual spot and within 15 minutes (7:55AM) landed my first fish of the day...a tiny grass rockfish.

Back in the water and fish #2 came up 25 minutes later (8:20 AM). This time an 11" grassy. Tossed him back since I already had three nice fish in the fridge from yesterday and he was in good shape.

Ten minutes later (8:30 AM) and I have fish #3, an 11.5" grass rockfish which I released as well.

Fishing slowed after that and Brian arrived at about 8:45 AM. My usual spot opened up around 10:00 AM so we both moved North and Brian brings in a nice 11" grassy (released) shortly later followed at 10:57 AM with a nice Cabazon. We both are thinking it is legal, but it taped out to 14.5", so back he went.

At 11:36 AM my squid is hammered and I bring in a beautiful 13.5" grassy, which I kept. Brian also landed a nice 12.5" grass rockfish around this time which we also kept.

Fish #5, a 11" grassy, came at 12:10 PM, followed closely by another cabby (12.5") for Brian at 12:18 AM.

Fifteen minutes later I have fish  #6 a 11+" grassy with a FAT belly and a mouth FULL of squid, greedy little guy, lol. Let him go to after a quick picture.

Final tally: Me: Six (6) grass rockfish, Brian: Two (2) grass rockfish, two (2) cabazon. Another great day in Malibu. We headed back to my pad to make some fish and chips afterwards.

Surf Fishing Malibu 10-27-2012

Another Saturday, another day in Malibu doing what I love best. Arrived a little before 8:00 AM, had my first fish at 8:15 AM, a nice calico perch that taped out at a little over 11".

Back to fishing and I had a very small leopard shark (released) around 8:25 AM. Kind of quite after that for a while, catching one huge rock crab (released) until 9:45 AM when I landed my first grass rockfish on the day that taped out at a little over 12".

Back to fishing and at 10:05 AM I hook up with a nice 13.5" grass rockfish :). Back in the water and quite for a while until 11:15 AM when I landed another grass rockfish which was just shy of 12" and bleeding badly.

Wife arrived at Noon to pick me up. Another great day fishing in Da Bu. All fish caught on squid or bonito / squid combo. High tide was at 8:15 AM or so.

Surf Fishing Malibu 10-20-2012

Hit up my Malibu spot today. Arrived around 7:45 AM and was surprised to see three other people fishing, but they were way left of where I like to fish and my recliner was available :)

Caught my first fish about 10 minutes later. A nice 12+" grass rockfish. Into the bucket then back to fishing. Brian arrived around 8:30 AM and got set up. After watching me pull in one grassy after another he shifted slightly to cast in the same area I was catching them in and started to pull em in too. We left around noon.

Final fish counts:

Me: Seven (7) grass rockfish, five (5) of which were 12" plus and kept. Biggest was 13.5", smallest around 3", LOL.

Brian: Four (4) grass rockfish, one (1) 20" or so leopard shark. One grassy around 11.5" or so, but had swallowed the hook so was kept, all others released.

Twelve (12) fish landed total and two rock crabs which of course were released.

Another great day fishing in Da Bu.

6 Pack Trip with Redkorn (Lobster)

I copied and pasted the below from my friend Redkorn's report. Caught a ton of fish, no lobster.

We went out of SP for a short notice bug hunting trip. Met up with Burger around 5:28pm. Made our way down to the dock and put the gear away. Waiting on the others, Burger fished, While I was looking for bait fish around the dock.

With the lost, late along with a local motive bridge down. It took us about an hour to out of the bay. We started Test set's And fished.

Long story short. I took a 20min nap to wake up the plotting of which a magic marker would be use. Fishing was great!!! Hooping was bust, Mixed crabs, Seal stuck in net, No lobster.

Still fun, Sober fun since there was a 18 pack left alone.

Good times with random people and Burger.

Here are the fishing details.

Bait-Bonito!!!

It worked so well that most didnt use other bait's.

Surf Fishing Malibu 10-07-2012

Went back to my Malibu spot to fish for about 3 hours with my buddy Brian. I was skunked, and Brian caught a 12" cabazon on squid. Not like I can expect to catch fish every time I am there :).

Surf Fishing Malibu 10-06-2012

After being out of commission for a few days being sick, I thought what better way to spend my first day feeling good than fishing! The wife dropped me off around 7:40 AM and I was fishing by 8:00 AM. Ten minutes later, fish on! Brought in a nice 12" grass rockfish. Nice start! Fishing was slow after that with my bait getting stolen by crabs constantly (took a pic of one I brought in below) and making it hard to detect strikes as well. Around 11:00 AM I finally hooked up again, another nice 12" grassy! Two fish in the bucket, I am content but keep fishing because the wife is not scheduled to be back until around noon. Around 11:55 AM I feel a tap, tap, tap, tap, tap then I start to real in and...fish on! Brought in my FIRST EVER legal cabby! SWEEEET! Taped out at 15.5" and it was a smurf! Stoked to have caught my first ever legal cabby I pack up and leave just in time for the wife to pick me up. I love this spot! All fish caught on squid and double dropper loop.
