Jetty Fishing Port Hueneme 06-28-2013

Hit up a jetty in Port Hueneme with Brian from about 11:00 AM till 3:30 PM. Arrived at the jetty and set up near the end. Started fishing with squid and chatting with another angler that was at the very end of the jetty. While my attention was on fishing a sea gull decided to take my big ass bag of squid we planned to use for the main bait all day.....grrrrrrrrr. Luckily I had back up bait in the form of sardines, smelt and shad. With my preferred bait gone, my hopes for catching fish were not high. Got small bites all day, but usually that just meant my bait was gone (hard to keep those baits on the hook). So I was skunked for the day, Brian caught a nice 13.5" calico bass on sardine which was released. Lots of bird diving action around, so I am pretty sure there was some kind of bait in the water, which could explain the slow fishing as well. No pictures till I get my new phone :(.

Surf Fishing Malibu 06-26-2013

Fished in Malibu again today with Brian. We fished from around 6:00 AM till 10:45 AM. Fishing was pretty slow for the first couple hours, but picked up around 8:00 AM or so. I caught a nice 16.5" calico bass around then. About 45 minutes later in a different spot I caught another nice calico bass that measured out to 15". A short time later I caught a small (9" or so) grass rockfish (released) and then a 11" or so black sea perch that was very pregnant (released very quickly :)). A little bit later and Brian catches his only fish for the day, a small (22" or so) leopard shark. I gotta say I love surf fishing in Malibu!

Surf Fishing Malibu 06-25-2013

Surf fished Malibu alone today from about 5:45 AM till 10:00 AM. There was a nice -1.41 tide, so I was able to walk out and cast from where my bait often sits when the tide is up. Fishing was WFO from the minute I got there till about 7:00 AM. I caught two 13" grass rockfish, two 14" calico bass and about a 9" grassy (released) all in that timeframe. After that it was pretty slow getting a bite here and there, but no more fish. I did get hammered by something, but accidentally left my reel in free spool, so by the time I recovered the fish was already off the hook. Hate when stupid mistakes cost me fish, but it happens :).

My phone / camera died so no live pics of the calicos which are much prettier when they are still alive.

Surf Fishing Malibu 06-14-2013

Brian and I fished Malibu again today from about 10:00 AM till around 4:00 PM. We both fished with squid. Fishing was pretty slow all day, but we both managed to catch some fish. Brian caught a small grass rockfish and a pig BSP (around 14", released since neither one of us really like perch). I caught two very small grass rockfish and a nice 15" Calico Bass that I would not have caught if the nice couple that decided to set up within sight of where we were fishing and proceeded with a nice photoshoot of her wearing nothing but a thong had not shown up, which kept us fishing for about an hour longer than we were planning :) Sorry, no pictures of that.

Jetty Fishing Ventura 06-12-2013

Brian and I fished the Greenock Jetty in Ventura from about 12:30 PM till 4:00 PM. We both fished with squid with me catching a small Cabazon and Brian catching a small bat ray (which he promptly dropped down a hole after tripping, but was able to fish it out for the safe release). I hooked another bat ray, but it snapped the hook off my 40 lb test line. Pretty slow fishing, but it was a beautiful day to be out on the water anyways.

Surf Fishing Malibu 06-10-2013

Hit up the Malibu spot with Brian today. We started fishing around 10:00 AM and left around 3:00 PM. Fishing was very slow all day. I did catch one 11.5" grass rockfish on squid at 11:20 AM, but other than that no other fish. Still nice to be on the water even when fishing is slow.

Surf Fishing Malibu 06-07-2013

Decided to hit up the Malibu Spot today. Low tide was at a little before 3:00 PM, so that is when I arrived. In the water right away and first cast I catch a nice 17" Calico Bass. Sweet start! Fifteen minutes later I catch fish #2 which I am unsure of the species. It looked and was shaped like a BSP, but it had spots on each fin. It was about 13.5" long and fat as hell. Back in the water and I get snagged a while later...while walking up the beach to work the snag out a sea gull stole all my bait....grrrr. It is only 4:20 now and if I leave now I will just sit in traffic, so...quick trip to Ralphs for squid and back to the spot. No more fish after that of course, packed it in around 7:00 PM. Both fish caught on squid. Any suggestions on the species ID are welcome.
