Redondo Break Wall 09-29-2012 to 09-30-2012

Met up with Redkorn, ucscrab and sector_one from PFIC at around 3:00 PM to hoop net the Redondo Jetty for lobster. Set up about 3/4 of the way to the second bend and fished at first while Redkorn caught up with ucscrab and I. ucscrab caught the only fish on the trip with a bat ray first, then a double hook up with a large sand bass on top and a small calico on the bottom. ucscrab left around 6:00 PM and then once night hit Redkorn had caught up and sector_one had arrived so we all started hoop netting for lobster. sector_one caught the only lobster on the night before he left around 10:00 PM and Redkorn and I hooped till about 4:00 AM before we packed it in and started the hike back out. No lobster, but it was great to meet up with new fishing buddies!

Birthday Fishing Palos Verdes Estates 09-23-2012

Fished Palos Verdes Estates area with the wife along for company. Fishing was super slow all day, with nothing caught at the first spot and one small rockfish at the second spot. A group of anglers leaving when I approached the second spot gave me a 15" or so Calico bass, a couple perch, a giant kelp fish and a wrasse. I let the ones still alive go and kept the rest for lobster bait. Almost died on the way out, it was a hell of a steep hike with loose gavel everywhere with two five gallon buckets and two fishing poles it was tough.

Malibu Surf Fishing 09-22-2012

Got to my spot around 8:15 AM about five minutes before the low at 8:20 AM. Started out with squid on the top and wall eye perch chunk on the bottom and only caught rock crabs at first. Caught three by hook and line throughout the day (released). Fishing was pretty slow at first until 9:50 AM when I caught my first fish, a nice grass rockfish that was just shy of 14". It rocked a piece of wall eye perch which of course was my last piece. So squid it was.

About 10 minutes later (around 10:00 AM), fish on again. Feels smaller, and it was. Pulled in a 11" or so Cabazon.

After releasing him and casting back out less than ten minutes later (around 10:10 AM)....another grassy on squid. Kept this guy since he was a little over 12" and looked tasty.

Cast back out and about 30 minutes later...fish on again, this time a 18" or so leopard shark. Damn, fishing is hot today!

Cast back out and about five minutes later another Leo, then another then a decent sized perch to boot! Let him go because I do not care for perch too much and two rockfish is plenty.

Great day of fishing, packed it in around 11:45 AM. 3 and a half hours of fishing, seven fish, I will take that any day of the week. Some nice joggers were also an added bonus! These are the days that make me love fishing the sea. I am truly blessed.

Ventura Pier 09-16-2012

Got to the pier around 10:30 AM and set up around mid pier. Fished with double dropper loop at first and caught my only fish of the day on squid (It was a croaker). Used it for bait for no takers. Buddy Brian was killing it on the sabiki catching Wall Eye Perch, Queen Fish, Lizard Fish and Spot Fin Croakers. All pretty small and most released except a few used for bait. Crabbing was slow too, ended up with two keeper rock crabs, but tossed em back before I left since it is not enough meat too much trouble to prepare with only two crabs, lol. Still nice to be back. Some lovely looking locals strolled the pier too, which was a nice bonus.

Surf Fishing Malibu 09-15-2012

Finally made it back to the salt after a long break due to a busy schedule. Arrived at the spot around 4:40 PM and left around 11:00 PM. Fishing was good at first with my catching a small leopard shark after about 20 minutes then a couple more over the next hour. After that, dead as a doorknob once the sun went down. Guess the new moon is not the ideal time to night fish, lol. There seemed to be a ton of crabs in the area since I caught two rock crabs (released of course) and my squid kept getting shredded. Nice to be back on the salt and of course there was some nice distractions walking by as well ;).
